Before breakfast one morning, Fern Arable stopped her father from killing a runt pig.  Her father had said, "A weakling makes trouble."
but then Fern protested,
"It's unfair…The pig couldn't help being born small, could it?  If I had been very small at birth would you have killed me?
The Arables let Fern keep the pig and take care of it.
